Contrary to popular belief the Doppelbock is not a stronger version of the traditional Bock beer. Its origin comes from the Italian monks St. Francis of Paula, the Paulaners, who brewed this nourishing beer since 1627 for support during their long fasts. It took until 1780 for the public to officially have the right to purchase it, following the approval of the pope. We say officially because the monks were already selling this beer illegally for a long time.
