First exported to the Baltic Sea region in 1781 by the Barclay-Perkins brewery, it was brewed for more than 200 years by the Barclay-Perkins brewery. It became the preferred beer of the Empress Catherine II who ensured a regular import of this beer for the Russian imperial court, hence the new name of Russian Imperial Stout.
